I always make friends with the most random people. They start off as business associates (read: the guy at the checkout counter at the local super market) and then they become buddies. I like knowing lots of people. I’m very chatty (read: I’m completely in your face), friendly (read: pushy) and ask a lot of questions (read: nosey). Oh, I have lots of friends. Right now I have facebook friends, and when I was really into Twitter I had Twitter friends. Those were friends I’ve never met. John, my web designer, is one of those friends.
I met John from Shark Web Designs the way most people meet their web designers–on Craigslist–and once learning he was relatively normal for someone you meet on Craigslist, enlisted his services immediately. Actually, I hired John only after writing a very heartfelt email to Joe, my old web designer (read: friend), explaining why I needed to move on and how much I would miss him and appreciated his efforts and, of course, friendship.
Now here’s the problem with friends: They treat you like one of their friends.
The guy at the checkout line at Stop & Shop? He doesn’t bag my groceries. I’m sure he figures I’ll understand, being that we’re friends and all.
The guy who delivers supplies to the shop? Just the other day he told me that the Hello Kitty I sketched for a cake I’m working on is terrible. But that’s okay: You can say that to friends!
John, my web designer? He has no problem working on other projects for clients instead of working on my website and specifically telling me NOT to call him on Sunday as he needs to watch football or that he missed our scheduled phone meeting because he was at the gym. That’s cool. We’re friends! Friends reschedule on friends.
And so, after beginning work on my website in June of 2013, the redesign concluded in January, 2014. Just a few months behind schedule.
Really though, John was wonderful. Thanks to him, my website is now mobile friendly. It has a shopping cart with an SSL certificate. And, it’s super fancy. (And all my friends know how fancy I am.) John was patient and understanding. He explained a bunch of stuff a bunch of times, and even though I still couldn’t tell you what any of it means, I know he explained it thoroughly and well. He even took a few of my calls on Sundays during football season. And he was professional through and through.

Of course you can check out our new website for yourself. And if you ever need a friend, feel free to call me.
