Like many people, I remember the first record I ever bought. It was 1978 and I was eight years old. I had walked down Austin Street to Record World and asked the clerk for Oh Pomador. He wasn’t familiar with the song (strange, I thought, as it was a current Top 40 hit) and asked me to sing a few lines. So I did. And I sang it with the gusto and bravado of an American Idol audition:
Go on, now go
Just turn around now
‘Cause you’re not welcome anymore
Weren’t you the who tried to hurt me with goodbye?
Did you think I’d crumble?
Did you think I’d lay down and die?
Oh no not I…
The song was I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor, and the line I thought was Oh Pomador was actually Walk out the door.
I’ve always loved music, and when I think about my life, there’s a soundtrack jam-packed with music that plays–sometimes softly in the background and sometimes very prominently–along with it. Even when I think about my business, music is always at the forefront (as I mentioned in this post).
Which brings me to my exciting announcement: I’m teaching an online cake design class at Craftsy that launches in early August! If you’re unfamiliar with Craftsy, you can read more about it here. In my class, I’ll be sharing some of my favorite techniques, and all the secrets you’ve been wondering about. I’m really excited about it, and I’m really looking forward to meeting you, interacting with you in the Craftsy online forum, and seeing your designs inspired by my techniques. Without giving too much away, here are a few peeks at the four cakes I’ll be teaching:
When I think about this new venture, all I can hear is the Beastie Boys song:
She’s crafty–she’s gets around
She’s crafty–she’s always down
She’s crafty–she’s got a gripe
She’s crafty and she’s just my type
Okay so the word in the Beastie Boys song is crafty not Craftsy, and the meaning couldn’t be more different, but that’s just where my mind goes. I’ve never been a Beastie Boys fan, but since it seems you don’t get to choose the songs on your life’s soundtrack, but they instead choose you, I’ll just add that one to the playlist.
‘Cause I’m Craftsy.
See you in class!
