What can you use instead of ditalini when cooking?

To substitute ditalini in your next recipe, you should use ditaloni or tubettini. Although both are slightly larger, they have a similar shape and are used in similar ways in the kitchen. Although Risoni are a different shape, they are an easily accessible pasta that is perfect for soups and stews.

1. Ditaloni

Ditaloni pasta is an excellent alternative to ditalini. It has the same tube shape, but is slightly larger and longer. Use it when preparing a dish with pasta sauce. A pipe with a larger diameter will carry more sauce.

Expert advice: Use the Ditaloni Rigati (ribbed pasta) for heavier sauces and the smooth variants (Lisci) for lighter sauces and soups.

2. Toubettini

Are you making pasta e fagioli, the classic pasta and bean soup? Try tubettini, a pasta that is very similar in shape but slightly longer.

In the recipes where ditalini are used, they are used to give volume to the dish. It also helps to absorb water, resulting in a nice thick consistency. Toubettini will do just as well.

3. Risoni

Risoni (also called orzo) are another type of pasta, but their shape is very different. It is not tubular, but oval with pointed ends. Risoni isn’t that effective at fishing for pasta sauce. However, it works well in soups to swell and thicken food.

We have included Risoni in this list because it is an easily available ingredient that can be found in any grocery store.

Corallini, or small coral, are another type of paste that can be used instead of ditalini. They are the same size and have the shape of a tube; the most obvious difference is that the inside of the Corallini tube is smaller.

Corallini is perfect for adding to the consomma or broth added to traditional Italian soffritto. It also goes well with cream soup. Although the form of this paste is popular with children and used in children’s dishes, adults will also appreciate it when added to dishes cooked in a liquid.

6. Anellini

If you’ve ever eaten Franco-American SpaghettiOs, you’ve probably tried the anelli pasta. These are small thin rings of pasta, delicious in a tomato sauce. Anellini are a smaller version of this spaghetti that are a good substitute for Ditalini.

Use the anellini in pasta salads, soups or to make a classic fried timballo. They can also be used in cakes with a delicious golden crust.

7. Noodles

If you want to make macaroni with cheese or a pasta salad, elbow macaroni is the best choice. It’s also easy to find in stores, so we decided to include it in this list.

This pasta is larger than ditalini and therefore takes longer to cook. We do not recommend it for fajoli noodle soup (fazoola noodles).

8. Acini di pepe

Acini di pepe pasta can be used as a useful thickening agent for soups. They are much smaller than ditalini and are shaped like small peppers. Acini di pepe are not our favorite substitute, but they are good as a last resort when no other options are available.
