Crispy Air Fryer Sweet Potato Chips – 2024 Guide

I have always enjoyed the taste of sweet potatoes, but I don’t like the way they taste when they are overcooked, as they become too soft and sticky. I will often opt for fried sweet potatoes and then season them with a little bit of salt and pepper for a healthier alternative. I stumbled on the air fryer recently and decided to give it a try. The appliance uses little air to cook food, so it takes less time and produces tiny crispy nuggets of goodness.

Everyone loves fries, so why not sweet potato fries? We think these are the perfect chips for a party snack. Its slightly sweet taste goes perfectly with beer, wine and cocktails. And I think everyone appreciates the uniqueness of a bowl of sweet potato chips.

How to make sweet potato fries in the deep fryer

Slice the sweet potatoes into thin slices (thin, like regular potato chips), preferably with a mandolin. Rinse the windows with cold water and wipe them dry. Some recipes suggest soaking the slices in water for 20 minutes, but I don’t think this is necessary. The result is the same, so save time.

Preheat the deep fryer to 180°C. It only takes a few minutes to heat up, so you can do it while you add the olive oil to the slices.

Brush the slices lightly with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. You don’t need much olive oil for this, just a very thin layer. Place them in a single layer in a hot fryer. If they don’t all fit in there without stacking them, cook them in batches instead of overloading the basket.

Roast in the open at 350°F for about 10 minutes. After 5 minutes, shake the basket and put the chips back in. Keep a close eye on the fries, checking them every few minutes to make sure they don’t burn, and removing them as soon as they start to brown. They may still be a little soft; they will become crispier as they cool.

Place them on a wire rack to cool and crisp for a few minutes.

Tips for making the best sweet potato chips

You don’t need to spray the basket with cooking spray because the potatoes are covered in olive oil.

Cooking time depends on the thickness of the slices. It may take 8 to 12 minutes to cook. After 5 minutes, watch carefully to make sure they don’t burn and take them out as soon as they start to brown. They may still be a little soft in the middle, but once cooled they will crisp up. If you’re not sure, take one out of the basket and let it cool for 15 seconds to see if it crisps up properly. If not, continue cooking.

You can overlap the slices a bit in the basket, but don’t stack them or they won’t cook properly. Work in batches instead.

Don’t you have a deep fryer?

If you don’t have a deep fryer, I recommend you buy one. This is the kitchen gadget I use most often. It sits on my kitchen counter and I use it for almost every meal. It’s a really super quick way to cook without turning on the oven and it does great with things like chicken and pork chops, fries and even croutons for a salad.

There are many excellent fryers on the market today that you can buy in different sizes to suit your needs. If you are cooking for one or two people, it is best to go for the small 3 litre, while for a large family, it is best to go for the 6 litre and larger. I prefer the ninja fryer.

If you don’t have a hot air fryer, you can also fry fries. Here are the instructions for baking.

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  • Lightly brush the sweet potato slices with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Arrange them in a single layer on the dish.
  • Bake at 355°F for about 15-18 minutes. After about 13 minutes, watch carefully to make sure the fries don’t burn and take them out when they start to brown a little. They may still be a little soft; they will become crispier as they cool.
  • Place them on a wire rack to cool and crisp for a few minutes.
